Refuge 31.6 explores a space in a landscape. It address’s the terroir of the site, situated at 31.6 degrees south and within a big landscape, the architecture provides a platform to distil the human experience. Importantly, Refuge 31.6 is being undertaken as a live project, with both design and build informing the process. This is as much a cultural construct as it is an architectural form, as much a symbol of a certain way of life as it is a marker of the human relationship to place. Such complex connotations and meanings have, at times, rendered the “cabin” indefinable and elusive. But at its essence, the architecture conjures ideas of a simpler, more primal existence.
It stands apart from ordinary life. It provides basic shelter. It allows for communion with nature.
