Interrogating the ruin
The Platypus site at Neutral bay has had many industrial uses over the years, what once was the North Shore Gas works which supplied coal gas to residences and businesses on the north side of the harbour has now been left in ruin isolated from the surrounding context for a century.
The site is surrounded by middle class suburbs with a distinct lack of diverse activity and mixing of social demographics with the market driven architecture decaying any notion of a complex social order. This is typical for Sydney with the control on its nightlife having a detrimental effect on the character and vitality of its culture.
There is the potential to regenerate the redundant industrial land as a stage for civic interaction to regain that social order.
